May-June Issue in shops April 30th

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

In our May-June issue, Shindig! Magazine has persuaded Andy Partridge and Dave Gregory to talk about their heartfelt love of British psychedelia and why XTC developed the alter-ego THE DUKES OF THE STRATOSPHEAR in the mid-80s.

Both Andy and Dave grew up in the late '60s and were enthralled by the psychedelic records that they heard on the radio as teenagers. You could say that eccentric British spirit was ingrained in them at an early age. As writer Marco Rossi notes in this issue's cover story "XTC always had something psychedelic about them, even on their earliest punk sides".

The massive impact that British psychedelia is still having on contemporary music is exemplified by the re-imagined Peppersesque spectacle of new bands such as PANIC AT THE DISCO. With the imminent reissues of the two DUKES OF THE STRATOSPHEAR albums, this is going to be the perfect sunny summer for drinking Pimms and eating cucumber sandwiches on the lawn.

Remember, Andy Partridge does not do interviews... but he did for Shindig!

* We take a look at what was happening in San Francisco in 1966 in our second part of Johnny Black’s day-by-day chronology of the city's vibrant musical scene. Featuring THE GRATEFUL DEAD, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING COMPANY and QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE.

* BLUE ASH were an amazing American power pop band whose roots lay in the psychedelic ’60s. We survey the career of this cool-looking but unfortunate group and give them the full re-appraisal.

* THE ZOMBIES and THE SONICS get marked on their recent reformations for better and for worse.

* And there's a whole lot more too, including THE STORY (fabulous new folk music in the psychedelic British tradition), a copious amount of reviews covering the latest re-issues and the new bands that other magazines do not cover, book reviews and DVD reviews of all of the subjects that appeal to us and our growing legion of readers.

Shindig! Magazine's May-June issue is in the shops on 30 April.
UK: WH Smith, Borders, Fopp, newsagents and record stores.
USA: Barnes & Noble, newsstands and record stores.
Also on sale in Canada, Australia, Germany and The Netherlands.

March-April Issue out now!

Well bloody hell. We've gone and done it. Our best issue yet hits the stores, shops and online abodes of the world! Shindig! Vol 2 Issue 3 will blow the minds and trip the light fandango of all who touch it! And man, if you read it you'll never come down! Starting our San Francisco Scene trilogy we kick off with a detailed timeline of what went on in '65; accompanying this is a HUGE interview/overview with THE CHARLATANS. Elsewhere we look at UK psych-pop lords THE FAIRYTALE, naughty girls THE GTO's, DYLAN AND THE BAND, garage teen rebels GONN, overlooked/undervalued albums by THE 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS, THE HOLLIES, SANDIE SHAW and YES. We close the distraught tale of MOBY GRAPE and the Lama travels to deepest Africa to soak up the psychedelic sounds of WITCH and AMANZ. Throw in the usual eclectic review section and a new look magazine that leaves the competition at the starting line and you're onto a winner. Buy or subscribe today.

Shindig! is now available throughout the UK in WH SMITHS. This issue will be available from Feb 27th and from then on you'll be able to buy every issue at this major outlet. Yes indeed, the story of Gary Walker & The Rain. The album will be reissued on CD this year too on Bob Stanley's Eclipse label -- this will be this superb psych-pop album's first official release! Stefan tells its story in Shindig! You'll love the pics!
Elsewhere Pat Long interviews The Sonics, Jeanette speaks with Wendy Flower and talks about that wonderful album by Wendy & Bonnie. There's part two of our Moby Grape story, a fun look at the evolution of what we call Garage Fashion, the fab Oz psych-pop of Procession and a whole lot more. Subscribe today and don't miss an issue.

Here're The Sonics live at Cavestomp last year. You can catch them in London this March.

Shindig! Is Here!!!!

Shindig! is back! Bigger! Better! Sexier! More exciting! Shindig! is back! Shindig! is back!

And I must say how pleased all involved are with our phoenix-like return. Volume 2 Issue 1 is as good as we could hope -- and in full colour! The print quality is more than we could have hoped for. Andy, Marc and PJ's layouts are fab and our writers have pulled out the stops. And the reviews are back too... with plenty from me my hearties!

Better still, there'll be another one eight weeks later... and then another... and then another... and so on. Hurrah! Now with Volcano behind us we won't be wasting time trying to sell the mag ourselves and getting ripped off by distributors ... and ermm being pissed off when we should be really loving some bloody great music. I must be blunt, Shindig! had become more of a nightmare than a pleasure, but now that's all changed! Without fussing around and losing our minds my right hand man Andy Morten and I can edit this wonderful magazine whilst our Volcano saviours deal with the business. So with no further ado let's tell you exactly what's happening... and what will hopefully continue to happen, happen, happen...

Wanna buy the magazine now? Wanna miss out on having to search the web or walk to your local record shop or newsagent?Well, we have just the thing. At The Shindig Shop you can subscribe to Shindig! directly. That's right, you can finally subscribe and never miss out! What with our major-league distro being slower than we would have hoped, it's the best option! In doing this we have cut corners and will save you so much in shop price mark up! In the UK, for instance, a yearly sub for the SIX issues will cost only £23! Yes £23! And what will it get you? A perfect bound, glossy magazine that is full of interviews, features, unseen pictures, columns and reviews! Basically everything you loved about Shindig! of old, but bigger and better! And yes, the beloved reviews are back.

It's an exciting, and somewhat nerve wracking, time for us, but we hope that our new found profile will reach out to new readers, turning them onto music they knew little about! How long have serious rock and roll and pop fans of a certain vintage had to put up with constant recycling of The Fabs, Dylan, Stones and Zep? Too long! Shindig! loves the big bands too but we feel that they have been spoken about enough, for too long. Please spread the word and help us get there!

When was the last time you read and in-depth interview with MOBY GRAPE?

Could that be.... NEVER? Shindig! will be the magazine that vinyl hounds, CD reissue fanatics and culture vultures swoop upon. We will be their magazine... and yours too. Our doors are open so come inside.

Drop me a line with comments and suggestions. Look forward to hearing from you,

Jon 'Mojo' Mills, Editor-In-Chief
